How to read the numbers on your sidewall, and what to send the shop if you cannot find them.
Your tire size appears on the sidewall in a format such as 225/55R17.
The first number is the tire width, the second is the aspect ratio, and the number after R is the wheel diameter. If you are unsure, send the shop your vehicle year, make, model, and trim for help.

What the numbers on your tire mean
Every tire carries its size moulded into the sidewall. Select any part of the example below to see what it tells you.
- 225 Width
- The tread width in millimetres, measured across the tire from sidewall to sidewall.
- 55 Aspect ratio
- The sidewall height as a percentage of the width. A lower number means a shorter sidewall.
- R Construction
- R marks radial construction, which is what almost every modern passenger tire uses.
- 17 Rim diameter
- The wheel diameter in inches. This one has to match your wheel exactly.
- 97 Load index
- A code for how much weight the tire is rated to carry. Bring it to the shop if you tow or haul.
- V Speed rating
- A letter for the tire’s rated speed capability.
